Attitude for Development Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee has overtaken Wiz Khalifa's "See you again" as the most watched YouTube video of all time. It has now got more than 4.5 billion views on YouTube. That is staggering. This hit video also soared well past long term record holder "Gangnam Style". So what has despacito, meaning slowly in Spanish got to do with an attitude of development? When a man sees a lady and says âYes, you know that Iâve been looking at you for a long time. I must dance with you todayâ You know he is up to something. If he goes on to say, âyouâre the magnet and Iâm the metal and I am getting closer and making a planâ and he says it with an attitude, he is likely to make an impression. For most enduring things, if you will succeed you canât do it in a rush. Despacito. Slowly. That would be the key word. In development, this word would be methodical. Another equivalent word could be systematic. So if you use the word slowly with systematic and methodical when talking about development, people may actually believe you are ready to achieve your goal. Folks, the real reason our development programs fail is that we are often not systematic or methodical. A man trying to ride a bicycle starts slowly and sometimes even wobbly before he picks up speed, riding smoothly. Now generally, where do our attitudes come from? Well they often come from our family and upbringing. They also come from conditioning by peers. And sometimes from modeling and prejudices. In this case it happens because we try to act like other people or have strong biases. So after you fuse all these ingredients together you are likely to develop an attitude which may be bad or good for achieving something. To develop an economy is a costly and difficult proposition. But it is not just the ideas that matter, quite often it is mostly all about the attitude. Development economists may do well to learn from the man trying to win a woman for a wife. He does it systematically and methodically. Perhaps it is all packed into something you may call âslowlyâ âDespacitoâ. Our hidden economics for you.
