HAPPINESS Happiness isnâ€™t just a pleasant thing you feel. Science is suggesting that it is much deeper than that. According to Dr. Sanja Gupta, CNN chief medical correspondent, being happy actually helps you to live a longer and happier life. He goes further to say that if you donâ€™t have at least one close friend, you are less likely to be happy. Apparently, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has decided not to leave the cheerfulness and happiness of its citizens to chance. On February 10th, 2016, UAE Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced through his twitter account the appointment of Ohood Khalfan Al Roumi, as Minister of State for Happiness. Now the UAE minister of happiness has emphasized how happiness is a serious job for government, reiterating that the major role of government is to promote happiness by creating an environment where people can flourish and reach their potential. As it turns out, what people need across the world aside from providing services is a government that works on building the skills of its people and focused on putting the happiness of its citizens at the forefront of its priorities. The second paragraph in the US Declaration of Independence goes like this: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. The pursuit of happiness is what life is all about so long as it does not infringe on the happiness of the other person. Freud, with his Pleasure Principle, and other psychologists with similar hedonic principles, explained our basic and strongest motivation in life as the drive to experience pleasure and to avoid pain. A growing body of research is also demonstrating that as we become happier, we become more compassionate, more creative, more energetic, more financially successful, more emotionally and even physically healthy. We share our lives with loved ones like our spouse, parents, children, and friends. So what better gift can we give a loved one than to contribute to their happiness? Employers listen to this. According to the new UAE minister, research shows that Happy people live 7.5 years longer and take one third less sick days. Unhappy people can cost companies up to 100 days of productivity.
