Desperate politics is bad for society. It teaches that you can use just about any measure to win an election. It also means that the winner may have to use desperate measures to protect his mandate and if possible retain his seat in any subsequent election. As I recently posted on our Facebook page, I am hoping that what we have now in Rivers State from the PDP and APC is not desperate politics. As every one noes by now, to me it does not matter what party runs Rivers State. What matters is how Rivers State is run. The 2015 election for governor of Rivers State was finally decided by the Supreme Court on January 27, 2015. It will be destructive and grossly counter-productive to keep looking for a way to remove the governor. Anyone looking for a new governor should start looking toward 2019. Let us now move forward and build Rivers State. However, this duty and responsibility has to be led by Governor Wike himself. He also has to try to reach out to every one, especially his folks in the federal government, regardless of party affiliation. This is not going to be easy but it can be done. I believe he has enough experience in government to do this. With good temperament and guidance Governor Wike will find a way to work with everyone, especially the Federal Government. I believe the APC federal government means well and understands that it needs the cooperation of the Governor and government of Rivers State for its mandate to build and lead the nation at this time. I believe that President Buhari is the right leader for the nation at this time. He is the president of all Nigeria, including Rivers State. Folks, to be clear, what is most important is the nation, our states and our economic institutions, not the party or the individual leader. The leaders that mean well and do well are the ones that will cause our institutions and our society to succeed. I have chosen the case of Rivers State as a test issue. Rivers State is extremely important as a national economic pillar. It is one of the nation’s top growth poles. And by the way, no manner of politics should cause the new state government to pivot away from projects and activities of the previous administration. Many of them are very laudable and should be continued and promoted. Let us not waste any time looking for search-lights to illuminate any perceived dark places of the past, instead let us look for what is good and build on it. I am Magnus Kpakol, and that’s my view.
